The ONC (Optical Navigation Camera) on Hayabusa2 uses a CCD to take photographs (the same as your digital camera). CCDs sometimes record false signals, especially during long exposures, and cosmic rays (high energy radiation from space) can also cause a dot or line to appear. This is called ‘noise’. Although image processing is done to remove noise, sometimes faint noise will still remain.
