研究発表について

毎年3月に、米国のテキサス州にて、月惑星科学の分野では世界で最も大きな会議の一つであるLunar and Planetary Science Conference(略称LPSC)が行われています。米国を中心に、世界中から太陽系天体関連の研究者が集まってきて、研究発表や議論を行います。今年(2016年)は、3月21日(月)から25日(金)にかけて、テキサス州のThe Woodlands(ヒューストンの近く)にて開催されました。 セッションは、月曜日の朝から金曜日のお昼までの4日半にわたって、5つの会場で並行して行われました。また、火曜日と木曜日の夕方から夜にかけては、広い会場でポスターセッションも行われました(写真1)。配布されたUSBの中のアブストラクトのファイル数が2060個でしたので、発表の件数がこれだけあったことになるのだと思います。

今回のLPSCでは、「はやぶさ2」に関連する発表がいくつかありました(写真2、3)。発表のタイトルにHayabusa2が含まれているものをプログラムから拾ってみますと次のようになります。以下、プログラムやアブストラクトから講演タイトル、著者名、所属、アブストラクト番号、概要を抜き出してみました。また、日本語で簡単な説明を追記しました。

TIR is an infrared thermal imager onboard the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. In this study, current performances of TIR are introduced by Earth and Moon observations.

Laser link experiment between ground SLR stations and a laser altimeter named LIDAR on Hayabusa2 was carried out, and the uplink laser pulses were detected.

The flight spare model of imaging spectrometer MicrOmega-MASCOT was used to characterize martian analogs samples using NIR spectroscopy coupled with imagery.

このように、主に地球スイングバイの時のデータの解析を中心に「はやぶさ2」の各機器の発表がありました。今回のLPSCについての情報は、LPSCのWeb

このLPSCでは、太陽系天体についてほとんどすべての分野の発表があると言ってよいですが、今回のハイライトと言ってもよいものは、やはりNew Horizonsミッションによる冥王星探査と、DAWNミッションによるCeres探査だと思います。ポスター会場にも、大きな写真が貼り出されていました(写真4)。もちろん、この他に、月、火星、水星、金星、木星土星の氷衛星、彗星や小惑星、そして隕石など、内容は多岐にわたっています。

LPSCに参加するたびに、世界ではこれだけ情熱を持って月惑星科学が研究されていると強く感じます。2019年3月のLPSCでは、小惑星リュウグウがハイライトになることを願って、はやぶさ2プロジェクトとしては頑張っていきたいと思います。

おまけ:
LPSCはThe Woodlandsというところで行われましたが、場所的にはヒューストンと言ってもよいところです。例年、3月のヒューストンというと、かなり暖かい(暑い?)のですが、今回はかなり気温が低くて、初日の月曜日の朝などは、屋外に駐車してある車の窓が凍っていました。かなり前からLPSCには参加していますが、こんなことは初めてです。それでも、会議の部屋は冷房がかなり効いていました。暖かい(暑い)と思って服装を油断すると、会議の部屋の中で凍えることになるのですが、今回は、そもそも外気温も低かったです。ところで、泊まったホテルにきれいな花壇があったので写真に撮っておいたら(写真5)、数日後にはなぜか植え替えられていました(写真6)。朝の気温が低くてしおれてしまったのでしょうか?
